Cultural Capital
At St Philomena’s Catholic Primary School, we recognise that cultural capital is fundamental in enabling children to aspire, achieve and participate confidently in the wider world. Cultural capital refers to the knowledge, experiences, skills, values and understanding that children develop over time, which support them in making positive choices, raising aspirations and overcoming barriers. We understand that cultural capital plays an important role in promoting social mobility by ensuring that every child, regardless of background, starting point or circumstance, has access to rich and meaningful opportunities that broaden horizons and help them succeed.
Guided by our mission, “With Christ at the Centre, we strive for excellence, act with respect and serve our community,” we are committed to developing the whole child. Through our curriculum, Catholic life, pastoral provision, enrichment opportunities, leadership experiences, community partnerships and wider school experiences, we intentionally build children’s personal, social, spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development.
We believe that every child is created in the image and likeness of God, with unique gifts, talents and potential. Our role is to recognise and nurture these gifts, ensuring children develop the confidence, character, knowledge and skills needed to flourish both within school and beyond.
Personal Development
We provide children with opportunities to develop confidence, independence, resilience and a strong sense of self. Through our curriculum, Catholic Social Teaching, Relationships, Health and Social Education, wellbeing provision and wider pastoral support, children learn to understand themselves, manage challenges and make positive choices.
We actively promote a growth mindset, encouraging children to embrace challenge, reflect on their learning and persevere when faced with difficulties. Opportunities such as public speaking, leadership roles, performances, workshops, educational visits, careers-related learning and enrichment activities help children develop confidence, raise aspirations and recognise their own potential.
Children are supported through key transitions and are given opportunities to develop self-esteem, emotional awareness and the skills needed to become successful and responsible individuals.
Social Development
At St Philomena’s, children learn that they are valued members of a wider community and that their actions can make a positive difference. Through pupil leadership, volunteering, charitable initiatives, School Council, Mini Vinnies, Eco Leaders and community projects, children develop a sense of responsibility and service.
Our approach to relationships, behaviour and wellbeing encourages children to show kindness, empathy and respect towards others. Through opportunities to work collaboratively, listen to different perspectives and celebrate diversity, children develop the social skills needed to participate confidently and positively in society.
We encourage children to understand the importance of citizenship, inclusion and contributing to the common good, reflecting our mission to serve our community.
Physical Development
We recognise that physical development contributes significantly to children’s confidence, wellbeing and readiness to learn. Through our Physical Education curriculum, extra-curricular activities, sporting opportunities and outdoor experiences, children develop physical skills, teamwork, perseverance and a sense of achievement.
Children are taught the importance of healthy lifestyles through health education, food preparation and nutrition, online safety and wellbeing education. We promote positive attitudes towards physical activity through participation in sports, celebrating personal achievements and encouraging children to develop confidence in their own abilities.
Residential experiences, outdoor learning, active play and opportunities such as cycling and road safety training further develop independence, resilience and practical life skills.
Spiritual Development
Our Catholic faith is at the heart of all that we do. Through Religious Education, daily prayer, collective worship, reflection, our Virtues to Live By programme and opportunities to learn about different faith traditions, children develop spiritually and deepen their understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.
Children are encouraged to reflect on their values, develop compassion and understand their responsibility to care for others and God’s creation. Through encounters with different beliefs, cultures and traditions, children develop respect, curiosity and a greater appreciation of the diverse world in which they live.
Moral Development
We support children in developing a strong moral understanding rooted in Gospel values. Through Religious Education, Catholic Social Teaching, our behaviour expectations and opportunities for social action, children learn about fairness, justice, responsibility and the importance of making positive choices.
Children are encouraged to consider how their actions affect others and to understand their role in creating a kinder and more just world. Through charitable work, fundraising, community support and acts of service, children develop compassion and a commitment to helping others.
Cultural Development
We are committed to ensuring that children experience a rich and diverse curriculum that expands their understanding of the world. Through literature, history, geography, music, art, languages, educational visits, visitors and cultural experiences, children develop knowledge and appreciation of different communities, traditions and perspectives.
We celebrate diversity and promote respect, equality and inclusion through our school ethos and curriculum. Children are encouraged to explore the richness of different cultures, understand their place within the wider world and develop the confidence to engage positively with people from different backgrounds.
Through access to the arts, performances, workshops, trips and opportunities to encounter new experiences, children develop curiosity, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of culture.
Impact of Cultural Capital
As a result of our commitment to developing cultural capital, children at St Philomena’s leave primary school with a broad range of experiences, knowledge and skills that enable them to aspire, achieve and contribute positively to society.
Children are confident learners who understand their strengths, recognise opportunities available to them and have the resilience to overcome challenges. They demonstrate respect, compassion and responsibility, and they understand the importance of serving others.
Leaders evaluate the impact of cultural capital through pupil voice, parent feedback, staff reflection, curriculum evaluation, participation in enrichment opportunities and observations of children’s attitudes and behaviours. This ensures that all children, including those who may have fewer opportunities beyond school, benefit from experiences that enrich their lives and support future success.
Through our provision, children develop the faith, character, knowledge and confidence needed to flourish as compassionate leaders and responsible citizens, living out our mission:
“With Christ at the Centre, we strive for excellence, act with respect and serve our community.”
